Match Report - Women’s League Round 4

A tough day at the office for the Lionesses and lots to learn from on day 4 of the ladies league at Fair Game.

First match - Paphos United Ladies v Polis & Latchi Lionesses. Lost: 5-0
A brutal first half against Paphos saw them score 5 goals in 15 minutes. That was hard to recover from but we did. We changed the shape and tactics for the second half and regained our composure. The Lionesses all did brilliantly to recover their focus and spirit in the second half and kept a clean sheet for the 15 minutes and neutralized any further threat they had. If only we can do that from the start in future league days!

Second match - Akamas Ladies v Polis & Latchi Lionessess. Lost: 1-0
The second game against Akamas was ours for the taking as it was played at a much lower tempo and intensity, but a mistake in football can cost dearly and Akamas converted their penalty for a slim victory. Overall it was a very frustrating game which we should have won being the stronger team for the majority of the game. Lessons to be learnt here on being ruthless and not lowering our intensity to that of our opposition.

Third match - Aphrodite Wanderers Ladies v Polis & Latchi Lionesses. Lost: 1-0
The final game against Aphrodites was a different story. A great performance from our ladies in terms of game management, tactics and superb personal performances all over the pitch. The Lionesses gave Aphrodites their hardest game of the day.

You all gave maximum effort and we were unlucky to not get a point from this one. We did win lots of praise from the opposing team and spectators. Again a couple of mistakes cost us the game with one penalty scored but lots to be proud of.

Lessons to take from today:

  • You can't pass through people!

  • The team with the lowest amount of offences are top of the league in both the ladies and men's leagues. Proof that less fouls, less running, less free kicks equals less sin bins and less penalties and wins games.

  • We are improving against more experienced teams and results will come our way.

A huge well done to all and thanks to our ever loyal spectators and also to Mick Mullin for his help in the dugout.
